RECIPIENTS OF THE ASPERA SCIENTIFIC GRANTS FOR 2002-2003

Dr. Gabriela Borsaru and Dr. Horia Bumbea have been selected by a panel appointed by the Scientific Editorial Board of the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (JCMM-www.jcmm.org) as recipients of this year's Aspera Scientific Grants. Dr. Borsaru is Head consultant for Internal Medicine, Specialist in Clinical Haematology with the "Coltea" University Hospital, Clinic of Haematology, Bucharest, and a Ph. D. candidate in molecular biology. Dr. Bumbea is a physician specialized in hematology at the "Coltea" Clinical Hospital, Department of Hematology, and an assistant professor at the University of Medicine "Carol Davila"- Bucharest. RECIPIENT OF THE ASPERA SUMMER INTERNSHIP GRANT FOR 2003

George Alex Popescu has been selected by Dr. Scott Manalis, Assistant Professor of Media Arts & Science and Biological Engineering at MIT to join a research group as a summer intern for 2003. His selection was based on his strong scholastic background and on his previous research experience. This summer, he will work with a group of graduate students on the application of a novel microfabricated detector to molecular biology. Aspera's travel grant, together with funding from other foundations, enables him to take advantage of this opportunity.

SCIENTIFIC GRANTS FOR 2002-2003

The ASPERA Romanian Educational and Charitable Foundation, Boston, MA, will issue grants to support two fellows for 1 year working in Romania in the areas of Molecular Oncology and Molecular Medicine. Grants are designed to foster scientific excellence and promote international collaborations/exchanges. Candidates holding an M.Sc, Ph.D., M.D. or being enrolled in a graduate program will be selected by a review panel approved by the Board of Directors of the ASPERA Foundation and appointed by the Scientific Editorial Board of the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (JCMM-www.jcmm.org), ISSBN # 1582-1838, edited by the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania. Candidates will submit a short proposal, their CV and three letters of reference to:

The fellowships will cover a stipend of $150/month for 1 year and possibly expenses of up to $700/year for training at international scientific centers of excellence. The ASPERA Foundation will receive bi-annual scientific reports detailing progress on the projects.

ASPERA'S HISTORY AND MISSION

The Aspera Romanian Educational and Charitable Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit private foundation. It was incorporated in June of 2000 according to the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with the mission to:

- to promote greater understanding and awareness of Romanian traditions, history and culture, and to encourage the development of excellence in Romanian arts and sciences, including by means of artistic, scientific and cultural conferences, student and professional exchanges, exhibits, concerts, scholarships and other forms of technical and financial assistance; and
- to encourage and support gifted students, artists, scholars and scientists of Romanian ancestry or interests in furthering their education and professional development.

A corresponding Romanian foundation, Aspera ProEdu, was established in Brasov in July 2001 in accordance with Romanian non-profit regulations, in order to oversee educational and research projects in Romania, with a concentration upon educational institutions in Brasov.

ASPERA'S MAIN PROJECTS FOR 2002-2003

  1. Operating the digital library MEMORIA.RO and continuing the oral history projects in collaboration with U.S. and Romanian universities and research institutes,
  2. Supporting young gifted students and researchers at the Universities of Brasov and Bucharest (see "Grants" above) and
  3. Supporting the Romanian high-school students participating in the American Computer Science League (ACSL) competition.

Fundatia Aspera din Boston, Massachusetts, Statele Unite ale Americii, cu numele legal complet "The Aspera Romanian Educational and Charitable Foundation, Inc." a luat fiinta in luna iunie a anului 2000 si este o organizatie neguvernamentala, non-profit, aprobata de statul Massachusetts conform legii fiscale americane, sectiunea 501(c) (3) din 1986.

Aspera are ca misiune:

(1) Promovarea cunoasterii traditiilor, culturii si istoriei romanesti in Statele Unite si incurajarea dezvoltarii unor rezultate de virf in stiinta, tehnica si cultura romana, prin facilitarea participarii cercetatorilor si studentilor cu rezultate exceptionale in domeniile lor de specialitate la conferinte, schimburi culturale si stiintifice, si alte forme de schimburi de experienta cu omologi din Statele Unite si

(2) Incurajarea si sprijinirea studentilor, artistilor si cercetatorilor tineri originari din Romania -- sau americani interesati sa studieze Romania -- in desavirsirea educatiei si carierei lor profesionale.

Fundatia functioneaza prin definirea si desfasurarea unor programe specifice, in colaborare cu diverse institutii de invatamint si cercetare, precum si cu diverse organizatii filantropice si neguvernamentale din S.U.A si Romania. Cereri de ajutor nesolicitate nu sint acceptate decit in cadrul programelor stabilite si aprobate de consiliul Fundatiei.
